Possibly one of the most inspiring pieces available today, this anthem will speak to the souls of all who sing and hear it. Hayes brings to life the richly poetic text by John Parker as he musically paints it with harmonic and melodic skill. He uses a simple, unison melody to set the lyrics describing the pre-creation void, gradually adding parts as the text asks, “Who plants the seed that causes life to be?” The piece then builds dramatically, both in texture and dynamics, as the refrain gloriously states, “God is the breath of life!” After new bridge material, the refrain returns, this time as, “You are the breath of life!” Hayes uses tonality changes very effectively to set each section apart, and the refrain features a sweeping melody accompanied by lush harmonies. There is some 6-part divisi in the majestic finish, but the part-writing throughout is quite accessible to most choirs, and the relatively challenging piano accompaniment is integral to the piece. This powerful anthem praising God as Creator would be appropriate for general use and will be one that you reach for again and again!
