COME TO THE MANGER (SATB musical)

This short 30-minute Christmas cantata written and arranged by Mark Hayes presents a delightful program of several beloved carols paired with the timeless scriptures that tell of the birth of our Lord. The cantata opens with a festive overture that sets the stage beautifully for the rest of the work. Following the overture are innovative arrangements of familiar carols in a wide variety of styles from classical to light rock. There are opportunities for congregational involvement, music for children’s choir, and several solos for both men and women. The two narration parts are taken directly from scripture and are carefully woven together to tell the story of Jesus’ birth, culminating with Philippians 2:5-11, which so powerfully speaks of Jesus’ Lordship. Hayes’ skillful writing and arranging make this work easy and enjoyable to prepare, and you will find moments of quiet beauty as well as dynamic power in the choral parts. In addition to presenting the work as a whole, the various selections could easily be used in smaller sections for Advent, Christmas and/or Epiphany. Its versatility makes this a must for every library!
