Hayes has crafted a new classic based in Matthew 6:9-13, the scripture best known as the Lord’s Prayer. Written in a through-composed style, this anthem starts out reverently, with men’s voices echoing the women. Hayes uses lush, but accessible 4-part writing that heightens and masterfully supports the text. The climactic moment of the text, “For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever,” is particularly moving, utilizing new tonal centers and glorious, arching phrases, which overlap from voice part to voice part. A unique feature of this setting is the optional instrumental interlude near the end, which may serve as an underscore while the choir and/or congregation says the Lord’s Prayer in unison. This prayerful anthem ends with a simple, intimate “Amen”. It is suitable as a prayer response, benediction or general worshp anthem, and is moderately easy.
